While watching the Olympic diving teams perform in Rio de Janerio, you might have noticed something a little green.
On Tuesday, August 9, the Olympic swimming pool diving venue in Rio quickly went from light blue to murky green. It seems like Rio cannot get away from water quality issues.
According to an article from ESPN on Wednesday morning, the water was so dark that divers could not even see the bottom of the pool. Reporters were unsure of the reasoning’s behind what caused this clean-to-green reaction, but it was assumed that the water filter busted. Some even thought that this was purposely done since everything is green in Rio.
FINA (International Swimming Federation) released a statement on Wednesday afternoon that states: “FINA can confirm that the reason for the unusual water colour observed during the Rio 2016 diving competitions is that the water tanks ran out some of the chemicals used in the water treatment process. As a result the pH level of the water was outside the usual range, causing the discolouration. The FINA Sport Medicine Committee conducted tests on the water quality and concluded that there was no risk to the health and safety of the athletes, and no reason for the competition to be affected.”
Proper pool maintenance is a struggle, even for the Maria Lenk Aquatic Center in Rio. Without proper maintenance, a pool can develop algae, foul odors, and either slimy or cloudy water, and cause itchy skin and burning eyes for those who choose to swim in them. Fortunately, there is a team of swimming pool service and maintenance professionals that can help rid this issue if it ever arises in your pool.
